The Hawkeye Initiative

Outside of Marvel Comics, there is a running joke called “the Hawkeye Initiative” What does that mean? Basically, comic book fans are taking pictures of women in comics and replacing them with pictures of Hawkeye and other male super heroes. The pictures of the women, however, are incredibly disproportionate. They either have impossibly long legs, a super long torso, or an impossibly bent spine (or all three). hi1
I’m not sure why people chose Hawkeye to be the joke, but the images have become very popular. Fans have taken the image above, and turned it into this:

hi2

The main reason Comic book fans have done this is because of the stereotypical views of man. When writers and artists think of super heroines, they tend to exaggerate certain body parts in order to make the woman “sexy”. I, however, do not agree with that. I think that the comic book women look weird.  “Sexy” does not always mean a thin waist, a long torso, and thin arms.

Monika Bartyzel touches upon this in her article on August 16, 2013

I know this is a big, controversial issue with lot’s of opinions, so leave your response in the comments.

My favorite DC and Marvel Artists

Now, I don’t read as many comic books as I used to, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the art or artists behind the comic. I have seen a lot of superhero artists, but these are my four favorites. Jim Lee, J. Scott Campbell, Alex Ross, and Stanley “Artgerm” Lau.

Jim Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea and has drawn for both Marvel and DC. Some of his most memorable works are All Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder, Batman: Hush, Superman: For Tomorrow, WildC.A.T.s, and X-Men: Legacy.

Here is an example of some of his work:

jimlee

The reason I like Jim Lee’s art is because of the exaggerated yet realistic superheroes. The male superheroes have huge, bulging arms and defined legs. All of his superheroes stand tall and have fairly geometric faces that are brought to life when they are inked and colored in. (His Joker drawings are fantastic!)

J. Scott Campbell was born in East Tawas, Michigan and drew for Wildstorm Comics and Marvel Comics. His most popular works are in Gen¹³(originally written by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi) and Danger Girl.

Here is some of his work:

The reason I like J. Scott Campbell’s work is mostly because of his characters’ faces and emotions. You can clearly tell what female face he drew because for the most part, they all look the same. However, he is able to capture the individual character in each face which is incredible. A few people have a problem with his female characters’ proportions (long torso, impossibly bent spine, etc.) but I don’t. If he wants to draw his women a certain way, there’s nothing holding him back.

Alex Ross was born in Portland, Oregon and drew for Marvel and DC. He mostly does cover art because of the time it takes him, but it is definitely worth it. His most popular works are JLA Liberty and Justice, JLA Secret Origins, Kingdom Come, and Marvels.

Some of his work:

The reason I like Alex Ross is because of the realness in his paintings. His characters’ proportions are plausible and the shading is incredibly realistic. He is able to portray each texture that he uses and that takes some incredible skill.

Stanley “Artgerm” Lau was born in Hong Kong and has done cover art for DC as well as other fantastic digital pop art. Artgerm is most known for his creation “Pepper” (whom he has drawn countless times with different appearances) and for the other beautiful female characters he has drawn. He also has a faux DC magazine named “Justice” which features his cover work of female superheroes varying from Wonder Woman to grown up Power Puff Girls.

Here is some of his work:

The reason I like Artgerm is because of his digital work. The color choices, blending of colors, and the values are al incredible. Especially coming from a computer. I’m used to drawing on paper with a pencil, but the fact that he is doing all of this digitally is awe inspiring.
